Prophet Muhammad (570-632) was the founder of Islam and a religious, political, and military leader. He preached in Mecca from 613 to 622 and attracted a relatively small following. Muhammad exposed corruption in pagan Meccan society, critiqued theories of divine causation of natural phenomena, upheld the belief in one God, urged his adherents to live righteously and generously, condemned the mistreatment of slaves, and spoke out for women's rights.

Many believe that Muhammad was born in Mecca and raised by his uncle because both his parents died when he was very young. According to Islamic tradition, at age 40 Muhammad began receiving visits from the angel Gabriel, who ordered him to recite verses that would later comprise the Qur'an, Islam's sacred text. Muhammad's wife Khadija and cousin Ali were the first of his followers. In 622, Muhammad received a vision telling him to emigrate to Medina, 320 km (200 mi) north of Mecca. He did so, along with his followers, which resulted in the migration of Muslims out of Mecca known as the Hijra; this event marks the beginning of Islam's lunar calendar.

The message of Islam is the same message delivered by all Messengers sent by God to mankind throughout history. All those who submitted to God's Will, together with those who worshipped Him alone without ascribing any partners to Him (i.e. without idol worship) were on guidance from their Lord and all rightly guided believers have attained salvation in this life, and eternal Paradise in the Hereafter - for all are equal in their worship of one God alone.
